Cognella (formerly University Readers)

Please note that our standard course pack producer, University Readers, has become Cognella. Their service, and even some of their employees, are the same, but their name has changed as of 2018. For more information on the  changes, please see this release from the company.

Important information about working with Cognella:

  • Cognella has assigned a dedicated service representative to work with Gen Ed courses.  Please let your Course Coordinator know if you plan to work with Cognella and we will put you in touch with our representative.  (If enough Gen Ed courses use Congella, we may also be able to receive a small discount for students.)
  • Cognella will obtain copyright permissions and will send you information about royalty costs for each item before finalizing your materials.  They can also help you to identify alternate sources with lower permission costs where appropriate.
  • It generally takes about two weeks to obtain permissions.  However, we recommend that you be in touch with Cognella at least two months before the start of term to ensure that your materials are ready for classes and that you have sufficient time to identify alternate materials if they cannot be obtained for a reasonable copyright fee.
  • Desk copies for you and your teaching staff will be available, either in digital or print form.
  • The library will order printed coursepacks (but not digital ones) to be put on reserve.  The Gen Ed office provides the library with a list of courses that are producing coursepacks, so you do not need to contact the library to request that a copy be put on library reserve.
