Coursepacks

A coursepack is a custom published anthology of journal articles, chapters from books or an entire out-of-print book, and/or original materials which have never been published (any and all of which are not available electronically via Harvard’s library system).  Harvard licenses a vast number of periodicals and other copyrighted works and we encourage you to identify whether the library system has licensed electronic versions of your materials so that you may post links to your website.  For further information, see Creating Links for Course Readings on Canvas Sites.  However, please note that it is not appropriate to post scanned documents of copyrighted materials on your course website.  For additional information, see the Office of the General Counsel's gude on Copyright and Fair Use or contact Harvard Library's Copyright First Responders.

If you would like to produce a coursepack, we suggest that you work with Cognella (formerly University Readers), a third-party vendor who will obtain copyright permissions, format materials, and sell copies of your coursepack to your students in digital and/or print form through their website.  Learn more about Cognella's coursepacks and copyright clearance services.  We encourage you to begin working with Cognella at least two months prior to the start of term as obtaining copyright permissions may take up to eight weeks.  Please see information about working with Cognella.

Please contact your Course Coordinator with questions about producing a coursepack.  We'd like to know about your experience working with University Readers, and we encourage you to be in touch with Gen Ed Director Laura Hess to give us feedback.
