Course Meeting Times

The Gen Ed staff is happy to work with the course heads and their departments to identify course meeting times that minimize conflicts with courses in the same category or on similar topics.

Gen Ed lectures are usually 75 minutes twice a week, though some courses will have good pedagogical reasons for offering the lecture once a week. In addition, TF-led sections or labs ordinarily meet at least 60 minutes once a week.

Please note that FAS legislation changed course meeting times beginning in the 2018-2019 academic year. Here are the requirements:

  • Courses shall be scheduled for 75 minute blocks two or three times a week or for 3 hours once a week. Those meeting twice a week may meet Mon/Wed or Tue/Thu; those meeting three times must be schedule Mon/Wed/Fri.

  • Courses meeting for 75 minutes must begin at one of the designated start times: 9:00 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 12:00 p.m., 1:30 p.m., 3:00 p.m., or 4:30 p.m.

  • Courses meeting once a week for longer than 75 minutes must begin at 9:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m., or 3:00 p.m.

  • Courses meeting once a week will appear in the Course Catalog for the full 3-hour block. However, a note may be included to indicate an earlier course end-time.

For additional information regarding the new schedule please see the FAS Registrar's website. Please contact courses@fas.harvard.edu with any questions or concerns.
